Chaozhou, a city established more than 1,600 years ago, is known for its rich historical and cultural heritages that play an irreplaceable role in Chinese culture. Chaozhou cuisine is one of the best in the country. It emphasizes color, taste, looks, condiment and container, and features delicate, light and fresh flavors, tender texture and ingenious and elegant presentation. Also, rich ingredients, superb culinary skills and unique savor are characteristic of its gastronomy, contributing to its reputation at home and abroad.

According to archaeological findings, the city’s ancestors made pottery food containers as early as 6,000 years ago. People wrote poems describing the local eating habits more than 1,200 years ago. With a history of more than nine centuries, the city’s tea cultivation and appreciation, represented by the domestic household name - Kung Fu tea, has, to some extent, influenced the formation and development of Japanese tea culture. Since Chaozhou natives went abroad for a living 350 years ago, the local culinary culture has been known to more and more people worldwide. Chaozhou is endowed with a favorable natural setting of lush mountains and clear waters. It has not only nurtured the various fine ingredients for the city’s savory taste, but also facilitated the natives to sail abroad, making culinary delights a signature of the city in the world. It is worth mentioning that Chaozhou gastronomy and Kung Fu tea have been listed as national intangible cultural heritages.

Chaozhou natives adore their food culture and are the best ambassadors for local dishes. The ever-creative gastronomy continues to unite the people and drive the city towards sustainable development.
