Chaozhou People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries cooperated with New Zealand Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre (NZICH) to unveil an exchange hall on Chaozhou Intangible Cultural Heritage in Auckland on September 21, 2019. The gallery displays Chaozhou wood carving, embroidery, straw paintings, handmade red clay teapots, etc. The exhibition has contributed to further exchanges and cooperation between New Zealand and Chaozhou in terms of intangible cultural heritage, facilitated protection, inheritance, and promotion of Chaozhou native treasures, and strengthened Chaozhou's popularity and reputation through growing non-governmental connections.
NZICH is the only organization of its kind approved by the New Zealand Government. It is responsible for discovering, sorting, reviewing, registering, listing, and managing intangible cultural heritages and enhancing their protection, inheritance, and promotion with the government, social organizations, and possible resources. It focuses on the cultural collections of New Zealand and South Pacific island countries and regions, classified into sections including Maori culture, early European settlers, early Chinese settlers, other ethnic cultures in New Zealand, Pacific islands culture, etc. It has represented the country in various international events around the world. Through exchanges, interactions, cultural trade, academic meetings, and forums, it builds strong relationships with other countries and regions, supporting its mission and purpose.
From July 25 to 27, 2019, Hong Chengchen (John Hong), the President of NZICH, and Xu Zida, Director, led a visit to Chaozhou, where they learned more about local cuisine, embroidery and straw paintings. Also, they held extensive exchanges with Chef Fang Shuguang, an inheritor of Chaozhou gastronomy, over the international status and promotion of the cuisine and invited him for an exchange trip to New Zealand.
