With a history of more than 700 years, Raoping Horse Dance dates from the end of the Song Dynasty or the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty. First performed in Xinfeng Town, a famous producer of porcelain, the folk art gradually becomes popular among the public throughout Raoping County.
Cloth-made horses are the most important prop in a show. To get such an outfit, artisans first make a horse-shaped mold out of clay, then bind a frame with bamboo sheets and bamboo strips to be covered by paper and, finally, deck the semi-product with colorful fabrics.
Signature dance moves, including waving the whip to walk the horse, jumping backward, skipping with the whip and spurring, are showed amid scene-based formations - a moving snake, jumping across four doors, passing flowers and chasing the honey-gathering butterfly. The choreography is lively and exciting due to dynamic moves and patterns as well as Chaozhou gongs and drums. The typical regional art integrates folk dance, music and crafts. In 2006, it was among the first listed as provincial intangible cultural heritage.
