May 19th marks China Tourism Day. To celebrate the day as well as further vitalize and promote high-quality tourism of the city, the local authorities organized a tourism carnival featuring native delicacies, aiming to show the city’s green development and people’s wellbeing. The event did its part in popularizing the city as the “Hometown of Chaozhou Cuisine” in its application for UNESCO’s City of Gastronomy.
At 10 a.m., the sonority of Chaozhou gongs and drums kicked off the event in front of the Guangji Tower. Soon, the official logo and slogan for local cuisine promotion debuted. What followed was a licensing ceremony where outstanding tourism attractions were given special plates. The awardees included 3A-level scenic spots, three-star hotels, cultural and tourist villages with local appeal at city- and provincial-levels, province-recognized industrial tourism routes, local-style feasts and favorable homestays.
At the carnival, visitors could enjoy the presentation of local dishes, the skillful performance by famous chefs, the insights provided by masters into the industry and the guided tours around the recommended routes. In addition, Chaozhou Food Court was open to all who wanted to try local flavors, such as Chaozhou Beef Balls, preserved fruits and baked snacks.
